📸 Understanding Aperture: The Secret Behind Beautiful Background Blur
Have you ever taken a photo and wondered how photographers get that beautiful, soft, blurry background while keeping their subject perfectly in focus?
One of the secrets is aperture.
Aperture is the opening inside your camera lens that controls how much light enters the camera. Think of it a little like the pupil of your eye — it opens wider in darker conditions and becomes smaller when there’s lots of light.
Aperture is measured in f-stops, such as:
📷 f/1.8 – f/2.8
A wide aperture lets in more light and creates a shallow depth of field. This is fantastic for portraits because it helps separate your subject from the background.
📷 f/4 – f/5.6
A great middle ground. You can still achieve some background blur while keeping more of your subject sharp.
📷 f/8 – f/11
A smaller aperture keeps much more of the scene in focus, making it useful for landscapes, architecture and group photographs.
Here’s the part that confuses almost every new photographer:
The smaller the f-number, the wider the aperture.
The larger the f-number, the smaller the aperture.
It sounds backwards at first, but once you start experimenting, it begins to make sense.
For me, aperture isn’t simply another camera setting. It’s a creative decision.
Sometimes I want the background to disappear into a beautiful blur so that nothing distracts from the person I’m photographing. Other times, I want the surroundings to become part of the story.
That’s one of the things I love about photography — two photographers can stand in exactly the same place, photograph the same subject and create completely different images simply through the choices they make.
